Family Crisis in the Church

Family Crisis in the Church (FCITC)

Training for Clergy, Paid and Volunteer Ministry Leaders, and Faith-Based Professionals

Mission: Empowering and equipping faith leaders to recognize, respond to, and support families experiencing crisis while promoting safety, healing, and collaboration with professional resources.

Faith leaders are often among the first people individuals and families turn to during times of distress. Whether facing conflict, addiction, abuse, caregiving challenges, or family division, clergy and ministry leaders frequently find themselves navigating complex situations that require both compassion and discernment.

Family Crisis in the Church (FCITC) trainings provide systemic understanding, practical tools, and clear response pathways for addressing family crises while maintaining appropriate boundaries and working collaboratively with professional resources when needed.

These workshops are specifically designed for pastors, clergy, church staff, elders, lay ministers, chaplains, ministry leaders, and faith-based professionals serving in paid or volunteer roles.

Topics include domestic violence, couples conflict, substance use disorders, problematic screen use, caregiving challenges, family division, and other complex family crises.

Explore the Family Crisis in the Church workshops below.

Family Crisis in the Church — Domestic Violence

Faith leaders are often called upon when families are experiencing abuse, fear, and crisis. This training equips leaders to respond thoughtfully while prioritizing safety and accountability.

Participants will learn to:

  • Identify various forms of abuse and critical warning signs
  • Utilize basic screening and assessment tools
  • Understand the impact of domestic violence on children and the family system
  • Navigate the legal and community response process
  • Support victims, those who cause harm, and affected family members appropriately
  • Discern when safety can and cannot be restored
  • Collaborate effectively with community and professional resources

Family Crisis in the Church — Couples Conflict

When couples seek help from their faith community, leaders need the skills to navigate conflict without becoming overwhelmed by competing perspectives, escalating tensions, or unrealistic expectations.

This workshop prepares faith leaders to:

  • Support couples experiencing relational distress or breakdown
  • Recognize the dynamics common to high-conflict relationships
  • Avoid common pitfalls when intervening in marital conflict
  • Understand the distinct roles of clergy, mental health providers, and family law professionals
  • Apply mandated reporting requirements appropriately
  • Provide effective resources, referrals, and next-step recommendations
  • Maintain healthy ministry boundaries while offering support

Family Crisis in the Church — Problematic Screen Use

Digital technology has created new challenges for families, marriages, children, and communities. This workshop helps faith leaders understand the relational and developmental impact of excessive or disruptive technology use.

Participants learn to:

  • Understand the developmental and relational effects of problematic screen use
  • Recognize how gaming, social media, pornography, and online engagement influence family functioning
  • Identify when screen use is negatively impacting relationships, responsibilities, work, school, or spiritual health
  • Support parents in establishing healthy technology boundaries
  • Teach practical strategies for healthier digital habits
  • Model and encourage a balanced digital lifestyle within faith communities

Family Crisis in the Church — Substance Use Disorder

Substance use impacts not only individuals, but entire family systems and faith communities. This training provides leaders with a stronger understanding of addiction and recovery while equipping them to offer meaningful support.

Participants will learn to:

  • Recognize family patterns commonly associated with substance use disorders
  • Understand current research and the scope of substance-related concerns
  • Identify how addiction affects spouses, children, and extended family members
  • Support families with greater compassion, competence, and awareness
  • Recognize risk factors and strengthen protective factors
  • Connect individuals and families with appropriate resources and treatment options
  • Foster hope, accountability, and recovery-oriented support

Family Crisis in the Church — Aging and Disability: Supporting Families Through Caregiving Challenges

Faith communities are often the first place families turn when caregiving responsibilities increase or when they face the emotional and practical realities of supporting aging parents or disabled loved ones.

This workshop helps leaders and communities:

  • Understand caregiver fatigue, burnout, and chronic stress
  • Support families experiencing role changes, medical crises, or decision-making conflict
  • Recognize how aging and disability impact the family system
  • Respond compassionately to grief, frustration, uncertainty, and loss
  • Create networks of respite, support, and practical care
  • Identify when professional mental health support may be beneficial
  • Strengthen community connections for families navigating long-term caregiving needs

This training affirms the vital role faith communities play in walking alongside families through aging, disability, and seasons of vulnerability.

Family Crisis in the Church — Divisive Times: Strengthening Relationships in a Polarized World

Families and congregations increasingly experience strain resulting from political, cultural, generational, and theological divisions. These tensions can damage relationships and affect both emotional and spiritual well-being.

This workshop equips faith leaders to:

  • Recognize how societal polarization impacts marriages, parent-child relationships, and extended families
  • Understand the systemic effects of chronic stress, conflict, and relational distance
  • Develop communication skills for navigating disagreement constructively
  • Foster cultures of curiosity, humility, compassion, and relational responsibility
  • Help families remain connected despite significant differences
  • Serve as a stabilizing, relational presence during turbulent times
  • Promote healthier patterns of engagement within congregations and communities
