There are myriad reasons that a couple might seek Marriage/Couples counseling. Some couples may be doing “marital maintenance” by giving their relationship a ‘tune up’, like we take care of our cars.
Some couples might be addressing patterns that keep emerging. For them it may feel like they continue to have the same fight over and over again, just the details are different.
Other couples have a big hurt or a breach of trust like an infidelity and want help to repair this hurt and move forward.
For others, parenting styles have become an impediment in their marital or couple relationship.
And some struggle to find a way of relating to extended family that feels okay to both partners.
With the support of Marriage/Couples counseling, many couples find healing and repair with issues such as these.
You and your partner can be assured that while working with a Traverse Counseling & Consulting therapist:
- We will work with you without judgment
- We have an understanding of unique dynamics of all generations (Boomers through Gen Z)
- We are able to help identify problematic dynamics that are so life-taking and support you in replacing them with patterns that are more life-giving
Do you desire to begin your marriage with answers to tough questions that all couples will face? Questions such as: How can we communicate better? What is the best way for us to deal with conflict? Handle our families? Talk about money or sexuality? What about children? Are we going to have kids? How many? How will we parent together?
At Traverse, we offer premarital counseling by trained therapists in marriage and family systems. This gives added benefit to the feedback couples receive.

Sometimes a couple comes to a crossroads in their relationship. Discernment Counseling helps a couple identify the paths that they have before them and the work that each of those journeys would involve.
Discernment Counseling is a short term (typically 1-5 sessions) counseling process to assist couples in identifying a path for their future. A couple that would be a good fit for this process is one in which one partner wants to save the marriage and the other may be considering leaving.
- Path one: Work towards repair and reconciliation
- Path two: Separation/divorce
- Path three: The status quo—keep the relationship as it has been
Our Clinicians are seasoned at supporting individuals in a couple relationship, at understanding their choices, their contribution to the status of the relationship, and a vision for a path out of being stuck.
Clients can choose between working with one provider for 90 minutes per session,
Clients may choose a teamed approach involving two therapists, which allows more individualized counseling for each client for a 60-minute session.
With our expertise in Family Systems and Relationship Therapy, our providers are able to assist couples with managing Path 1 or Path 2 or provide referrals to other therapists for these services when a couple has decided on a path.
